Ricardo applies both linear and non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) methods at all levels of its vehicle engineering programmes. Full vehicle and component models are rapidly constructed from CAD based geometry with boundary conditions simulating real world operating conditions in order to optimize both structural performance and weight.

Key aspects of the Ricardo service:

  • Simulation of front, rear, side, pole and rollover impact and roof crush tests to standard industry specifications such as EuroNCAP, ECE and FMVSS
  • Crash system development with expertise including pedestrian impact optimization, airbag and knee bolster development, interpretation of regional safety legislation and planning and management of crash test programs
  • Development of lightweight structures using CAE methods and advanced materials across a number of key vehicle components to reduce mass whilst meeting strict cost and functional performance targets
